 | Machang ( Zongzi ) is traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival (Mandarin: Duanwu; ) which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar , commemorating the death of Qu Yuan.
In 278 BC, upon learning of the loss of the capital, Qu Yuan's grief was so intense that he drowned himself. Legend states that the villagers threw zongzi to the river to appease the dragon and protect Qu’s body.
